SOS Schools in Niger

In Niger, nearly two-thirds of boys attend primary school, but less than half of primary-age girls are enrolled at school.

In Niger, there are currently two SOS Nurseries and two SOS Schools. These facilities provide education to children from SOS Villages and from the wider community. Staff members are well trained and the resources available to students are of a high standard.  Below you can find an overview on the SOS Children education projects.

Tahoua : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Tahoua has around 80 children, nearly half of whom come from the SOS village and the remainder from the local community.

• Children take part in all kinds of play and learning activities, including outdoor games which give the youngsters much entertainment. They are also encouraged to socialise and develop friendships.
• Teachers at the nursery school are trained in areas such as child psychology, learning and speech difficulties, early mathematics and creative arts such as painting.

The SOS Primary School at Tahoua has nearly 200 students, over half of whom come from the SOS village and the remainder from the local community.

• To improve academic performance at the school, an entrance test is organised for each pupil, giving teachers the chance to see student’s individual strengths and weaknesses. This also allows the school to monitor the progress of the students.
• The pupils are encouraged to build links with children from the surrounding community through sports activities organised on the school sports ground.

Niamey : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Niamey has around 150 children, with approximately 15 coming from the SOS village and the rest from the local community.

• The nursery has 6 classes and six teachers, plus a School Principal. All staff have regular training in key learning areas such as reading, early mathematics, language, storytelling, painting and physical development.
• The school organises various excursions for the children and also holds an ‘open door day’ for anyone who would like to visit and see what goes on at the nursery. Vaccination sessions are also organised within the school to ensure the health of the children.

The SOS Primary School at Niamey opened has around 430 children, around a quarter of whom come from the SOS Village and the rest from the local community.

• Academic achievement at the school is high, with pupils recently achieving a pass rate of 94 per cent for the entrance examination of 1st year junior secondary education. The school is also one of the few in the country to offer computer science (grades 4-6) and English (all levels) on the curriculum.
• Pupils take part in various national and international competitions including those for mathematical games, speaking and drawing. Pupils also enjoy a range of sporting and cultural activities.
