Since then, the programme has been repeated annually with the aid focused on children suffering from malnutrition, mothers and pregnant women. The SOS Children's Village Maputo is located in Laulane, one of the city's suburbs, in a hilly region dominated by sand dunes with poor vegetation.  The city centre lies at a distance of about seven kilometres.  The SOS Children's Village has been giving a family to children in the area since 1992.

The SOS Children's Village Maputo comprises fifteen family houses, a house for the village director, an administrative building, a workshop and a plant nursery.

Background to Maputo

Maputo is the capital city of Mozambique.  It has an officical population of 1.2 million, but it is thought that many more people live in the slums and other settlements in and around Maputo. It is located on the Indian Ocean. Overpopulation, unemployment, poverty and crime are major problems.
