This large female black widow (~18 mm) was found on a 5 foot web in Westminster CA on 11/18/2006. This photo shows the textbook red hourglass on the abdomen as well as the legs and mouth.

Black Widows are nice spiders. Once I had a female and her nest right outside my patio door. I left her alone and she left us alone. I was sorry when the exterminators came and ruined her nest. In Arizona, we also have scorpions walking across the floor while we watch TV.
