Many Chinese eateries in Kuala Lumpur and other cities in Malaysia take a form whereby the physical "brick and mortar" restaurant is filled with semi-mobile steel/aluminium hawker cooking spaces. The hawkers pay a rent to the owner of the restaurant to do business there while the owner of the space himself/herself often only sells drinks to the patrons. This setup allows for a large variety of food options local to different parts of Malaysia to exist together. Prices for Char Kuey Teow vary between hawkers and can range between RM3.50 to RM5.00 (December 2011 prices).
